Pepsico and Dreamworks to launch 3D superbowl commercial

  • by

It’s all about creating hype. In this case, it’s about creating hype for the already super-hyped event, the Super Bowl.

PepsiCo has joined forces with US film studio DreamWorks to make available 125 million pairs of Intel 3D glasses in the United States.

For viewers, this means they will be able to view a special 60-second 3D trailer for the latest DreamWorks flick “Monsters vs Aliens” and PepsiCo’s SoBe Lifewater, which will be aired during the Super Bowl.

Pepsi will distribute 125 million 3D glasses for free through its in-store displays located across 25,000 locations in the United States. These 3D glasses are made of new technological materials, not the traditional red and blue glasses. Viewers without the glasses will also be able to view the ad.

This seems like a win-win situation for both parties. Viewers with or without the glasses will be aware of both products (thanks to unprecedented word-of-mouth publicity and media buzz), so the recall value for both the movie “Monsters vs Aliens” and the PepsiCo brand will be astronomically high.

On the other hand, since the ad is hyped (and also positioned strongly against competitors), it will get maximum attention from willing and eager viewers across the US.

Don’t throw away the 3D glasses after the game is over. You’ll still need them for a special 3D episode of NBC’s hit comedy “Chuck,” airing Monday, February 2, 2009 (8-9 PM ET).
