Coca Cola is getting nostalgic this year and bringing in Steelers star Tony Polamalu for its Coke Zero Superbowl commercial, which is dedicated to the iconic 1980 Coca Cola commercial, starred by Mean Joe Greene. However, the 2009, Coca Cola super bowl ad with Polamalu is just not a remake of the old one, instead it comes with a twist.
In the 30-second spot, Polamalu reprises the role made famous by Steelers legend “Mean” Joe Greene. In tune with times, however, there comes a twist in the script and he plays it differently. It seems the original man of the older one, Joe Greene also would like the twist.
The ad opens with Polamalu similar to Joe Greene limping down a tunnel (this time it is bigger) to the locker room, while he was being followed by an innocent looking young fan (saying same dialogues) and offered an ice-cold Coke Zero to his tattered hero. That’s where all the similarities come to an end with the “Mean Joe” commercial.
What happens next is some humorous stuff while the ad reinforces the fact that with Coke Zero, it’s possible to have “Real Coke Taste and Zero Calories” Coca-Cola said. That’s the premise I suppose.
